Residential Service Worker (Housekeeping)

About the Job

The NJ Veterans Memorial Home at Paramus is seeking a qualified candidate to perform basic support work of routine difficulty in housekeeping, laundry, and/or similar activity; does related work as required.



This is a per diem position. 2-3 days per week. May include weekend.

Hours are EITHER 6am - 2:30pm OR 12 noon - 8:30pm 20 hours/week. 

Candidate MUST have at least 1 year of Housekeeping experience in a professional setting
 in a large facility.




       Sweeps, mops, waxes, and buffs floors in dining rooms, kitchens, dayrooms, lavatories, restrooms, hallways, and other residential areas.


  Operates mechanical scrubbing machines.


       Cleans, washes, and scrubs walls.


       Scours, scrubs, cleans, and polishes restrooms and lavatories including sinks, tubs, shower areas, commodes, and ensures that sufficient quantities of toilet paper, towels, and soaps are in these areas.


       Vacuums carpets, cleans, and polishes furniture, wheelchairs, bedside stands, wardrobes, and other equipment; moves, disassembles and assembles furniture.


       Makes beds, changing linens according to set schedules.  Changes soiled beds, ensuring that mattresses are washed and aired out and bed frames are sanitized.


       Collects, sorts, and counts laundry and prepares laundry slips for soiled sheets, towels, pillow cases, and blankets.


       Cleans and sterilizes bedpans and other equipment as indicated.


       Washes the inside and outside of windows and screens according to set schedules.


       Empties waste receptacles, trash cans, and so forth.


       Maintains the immediate exterior areas of cottages and buildings keeping them free of litter and debris.  Clears walkways to and from residential buildings.


       Sweeps and dusts entrances and exits of cottages and other residential buildings, replaces light bulbs, removes and hangs wall decorations.


       Maintains records on supplies ordered and utilized, ensuring that proper quantities are on hand for daily use; reports any discrepancies to the appropriate supervisory individual.


       Operates one or more commercial type laundry machines including washers, extractor, tumblers, dryers, presses, irons, and so forth.


       Sees that appropriate amounts of soaps, detergents, bleaches and other washing and cleaning compounds are properly measured and used; sees that wash and rinse waters are maintained at a proper temperature; prepares laundry chemical compounds and mixtures as required.


       Sorts, bags, marks, and tags dirty, soiled clothing for sending to the laundry; receives, sorts, folds and distributes clean laundry when returned ensuring that clothing reaches the appropriate client.


       Washes and launders clients clothing in accordance with manufacturers instructions; dries, irons, and folds clothing for distribution.


       Marks new clothing with the clients' names so as to identify ownership in accordance with established procedure.


       Mends small tears, hems, and so forth; replaces lost or loose buttons.


       Monitors clients closet and wardrobe areas for neatness.


       Marks for identification clients' shoes, sneakers, boots, slippers, and so forth.


       Ensures that clothing and outerwear for clients is reasonably appropriate and that all off season clothing is properly labeled, packed, and stored until needed.


       Handwashes garments such as orthopedic stockings, which require special care.


       Keeps simple records.


       Makes minor repairs and adjustments to laundry machines.


       In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo fire emergency training classes.


       Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.




       Candidate MUST have at least 1 year of Housekeeping experience in a professional setting in a large facility.



           Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.




       Knowledge of cleaning and washing windows, screens, and floors, waxing and polishing floors, and dusting furniture.


       Knowledge of general safety precautions to be observed.


       Knowledge of the problems encountered and the materials, tools and procedures used in washing, waxing, vacuuming, and polishing wood, tile, cement, linoleum, and other floors and woodwork, furniture, and fixtures.


       Knowledge of the proper use and minor adjustment of sweepers, vacuum cleaners, floor waxers and polishers, and other equipment.


       Knowledge of the procedures, materials, and equipment used in large scale laundries and/or linen rooms.


       Knowledge of the use of laundry soaps, detergents, bleaches, and other compounds.


       Knowledge of and skill in the proper operation and maintenance of washers, dryers, presses, and other laundry equipment.


       Knowledge of the preparation and use of types of laundering compounds and solutions.


       Ability to do washing and cleaning of windows, screens and floors, waxing and polishing floors, dusting furniture, and other work relating to the cleaning of cottages, classrooms, living quarters, halls, dayrooms, lavatories, auditoriums, and other residential areas properly and efficiently.


       Ability to operate a mechanical scrubbing machine.


       Ability to see that bathrooms and lavatories are properly supplied.


       Ability to move, disassemble, and assemble furniture.


       Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written instructions, and to learn quickly from directions and demonstrations.


       Ability to operate commercial type laundry equipment including washers, extractors, tumblers, and presses.


       Ability to select the appropriate washing soaps and detergents, bleaches, rinses, and water temperatures for specific types of laundry.


       Ability to keep simple records.


       Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.


       Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
