Department Head, Electrical / Utilities


  • Manage StarKist Samoa, Co. cannery Electrical/Electronics and Utilities activities
    in terms of measured and reported operational, financial, quality and safety
    performance objectives.

  • Provide technical and leadership guidance to a multi-skilled workforce
    covering a wide range of activities and accountabilities.


  • Control the costs of the departments as determined by the AOP and any subsequent
    QF amendments.
  • Develop, drive and maintain a fully operational, auditable preventive maintenance
  • Install, maintain and modify equipment and machinery in all phases of cannery
    manufacturing. To keep product to a clean, sanitary and contaminant free
    standard which complies with company and FDA requirements.
  • Continually drive process improvements and programs utilizing latest technology and industry best practices.
  • Optimize plant efficiencies utilizing process controls and efficient raw material flow to maximize fish yield and generate favorable labor variances.
  • Manage conversion costs, operating within budgets for staff and expenditure by Department.
  • Provide AutoCAD schematics for the Electrical and Utilities staff.
  • Use the Company’s CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) to ensure plant equipment maintenance is planned and completed.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of ammonia refrigeration system, compressors, evaporative condensers, freezer buildings, water chillers, two stage flooded system and single stage pumped recirculation system.
  • Manage and ensure wastewater treatment system, rotary screens and all associated
    tanks, pumps and piping are working in accordance with EPA permit regulations / NPDES.
  • Manage and supervise the operation and maintenance of Tank farm (fuel, salad oil
    and water storage).
  • Manage and oversee the maintenance of pouch processing equipment, and all retorts.
  • Manage and supervise the fire systems, installation and maintenance.
  • Manage the air conditioning unit service program in the plant and the contractor.
  • Plan, evaluate and recommend capital expenditures with plant Engineering Manager to ensure projects are finished within approved limits. Track spending to validate estimated costs and returns.
  • Minimize working capital through prudent requisitioning of parts and materials to support the maintenance. Manage inventories to ensure adequate stock levels while achieving plant and
    corporate working capital reduction goals for responsible areas.
  • Manage maintenance activities to ensure that all buildings are maintained in a condition that meets all regulations, company requirements and enables all production and shipping schedules to
    be met.
  • Identify Engineering opportunities to improve plant efficiencies, yield operating cost reduction and quality.
  • Manage and challenge a group of supervisors and their staff to deliver the required operational results.
  • Maintain a high level of contact with the Engineering Manager and peers.
  • Provide capital budgets, capital forecasts and capital appropriations for areas under my control.
  • Develop staff to their fullest potential.
  • Assure safe and healthy working environment.


  • Ten years of overall professional experience in Electrical management / specific
  • Five years in a position of similar complexity, scope, size and international impact.
  • BE (Electrical), NZCE (Electrical) or Electrical Registration preferred in Electrical/Electronics
    or else wide-ranging trade, technical and supervisory experience.  
  • Experience in Ammonia Refrigeration systems, Air compressor, Boiler and wastewater treatment
  • Knowledge of federal and local EPA regulation and requirements preferred.
  • Broad knowledge and experience in industrial automation gained at successive levels of responsibility
    in multiple areas of electrical/electronics/instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of corporate policies and compliance.
  • Demonstrated prior success in achieving results using team driven philosophies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in supporting corporate interest from remote site locations and ability to communicate and exercise very positive people skills.
